I'm a little OCD about harmful chemicals and trying to keep my home as GREEN as possible. So, when I was searching for a new crib and dresser, I read every review of every crib in the book- literally. Of course, I asked a handful of nannies and baby nurses what cribs they did (or did not recommend), and all their recommendations aligned with what the reviews in BABY BARGAINS had to say.

I did not read BABY BARGAINS in hopes to find the best "deal" on baby products. I read the book to find the best quality products on the market. For example, a crib that one of our VIP clients uses for their new baby cost $1500, and they have had nothing but problems with this particular crib and (according to the nanny) the customer service for this particular brand has been a "nightmare." BABY BARGAINS gives this brand a "C-rating". (A= BEST, F= WORST)

Three other VIP clients have purchased a different crib which retails for $400 and each client (separately) raved about their purchase. The nannies had positive reviews as well. BABY BARGAINS gives this particular brand an "A-rating".

Holiday Gift Ideas for Your Nanny

Every year we are asked the question: "What is an appropriate gift to give our nanny?"

While we do not know the perfect gift, here are some suggestions:

- Something she has indicated she wants/needs. This really shows you are listening and paying attention.

- iPad

- Kindle

- Gift Card to a nice restaurant or retail store

- A paid day off

- Gym Membership for 1-year

- Gift certificate for a massage and/or facial

- Cash

Like we said, there is no "perfect" gift. Written words are always in style!

Nanny Agency Owners Pet Peeves

1. Applicants who ONLY email their resume. No introductory letter, no “Hello, my name is...”, no picture, JUST a resume.

AGENCY ADVICE: It doesn’t have to be long but a simple paragraph, or a few sentences, that include: your name, your phone number, your current employment status, why you are contacting the agency, and any other information you would share when introducing yourself to a stranger. Note: Do not make this a long-letter, a few sentences are sufficient.

2. Nannies who “change their mind” simply due to salary AFTER being presented to a family or going on an interview with prospective family.

After the agency has thoroughly explained the jobs description AND salary AND benefits, the nanny goes on the interview, and after the interview the nanny calls the agency to say, “I crunched the numbers, and the salary being offered is not enough. Do you think they can pay a little more? Or offer more hours?”

AGENCY ADVICE: You KNEW the job description, salary, benefits, ect. Crunch the numbers prior to being sent on an interview. Crunch numbers and thoroughly consider the position being offered to you PRIOR to going on an interview.

Note: If the agency calls you about a job, and you are not able to give 100% attention to the agency owner or representative on the line regarding a job description they are calling you about, simply ask if you can call them back at a different time.

After you have been on an interview NEVER contact the agency and say, “I know they (referring to the family) can afford to pay me a higher salary…” NEVER!

3. Respond IN A TIMELY MANNER to the agency in the form of communication they have reached out to you.

If the agency calls you about a job or has a question call them back.
If the agency sends you an email, email them back.
Nothing is more annoying than calling a nanny, leaving a voicemail, and her responding via email.

AGENCY ADVICE: Don’t text message an agency. (Unless given permission.)

4. Don’t expect to earn more money than you did at your last job.

This is an industry like any other. You have to work your way to the top. Let me repeat WORK your way to the top! If you earned $15/hr. at your last job, don’t come to the agency asking for$20/hr.

AGENCY ADVICE: We are all on a budget. Have a reasonable salary range in mind when you apply with an agency and/or a particular job

5. Be a team player.

Congratulations! You just landed a new job. You MUST be a team player. The following are 2 recent stories why nannies lost their positions (shortly after being hired):

1. Mother asked nanny to sweep the kitchen floor. Nanny responded, “I did it yesterday.”

AGENCY ADVICE: There is NO REASON not to sweep the kitchen floor and be a TEAM PLAYER. If you have one child in your arms and another tugging at your leg, let the mother know you’ll get to it when the kids are occupied (nap time, eating lunch, doing arts and crafts, at school, ect.) But there is no need not be a team player as long as request are within reason….Better yet, take the initiative instead of having to be asked.

2. Mother asked nanny to take the child for a stroller ride around the park in the afternoon. Nanny responded, “We already went for long stroll this morning. I think we should stay around the house.” …the truth came out later, that the nanny was “too tired”

AGENCY ADVICE: Unless going for a stroller ride is going to harm the baby, go for a stroller ride. Being a nanny is not a job for lazy people- it’s for energetic, active, positive people. If you’re lazy don't become a nanny. Simple as that. Mom’s request is NOT unreasonable.

6. ALWAYS Keep Your Cell Phone Charged. ALWAYS!

Whether you are looking for your next nanny position or you have been working for the same family for years, ALWAYS keep your cell phone charged. There are no excuses for your employer not to get ahold of you- especially if you are caring for their children.

AGENCY ADVICE: You should maintain a car charger in your car (or the nanny/family car) at all times. Parents (and agency owners) should ALWAYS be able to get ahold of you.

How important is it to you to "support your local business" or "shop local/buy local"?

The other night VIP Nannies was invited to a private party at the Dermalogica store in Santa Monica, CA. I have had the privledge of hearing Jane Wurwand, the owner/founder of Dermalogica speak at many Step-Up Women's Network (www.suwn.org) events, but it wasn't until last night standing in her presence, INSIDE her flagship store, where I was hit overwhelmed with inspiration.

Jane had many enlightening, motivational, and educational things to say. But one thing really hit me: ALL Dermalogica products are made in the U.S.A. They are all made in Los Angeles, and shipped to 86 countries worldwide.

Today in the media, we hear A LOT about business being shipped outside the U.S.A, aka "outsourcing" and Americans losing their jobs to "outsourcing." Jane knows it would be less expensive to "outsource" but she choose's not to. She choose to support the country which has supported her and her family for decades.

#1 Bump It Up, Transform your Pregnancy into the Ultimate Style Statement, by Amy Tara Koch

In May I was at the Pregnancy Awareness Month Expo in Santa Monica, CA and saw Amy's "Bump it Up" booth. I immediately picked up her book, read 1 page and was hooked (and I wasn't even pregnant). Amy is a fashion genius- something I know little about- but have learned since I started reading her book.

I enjoy being comfortable. I like to refer to myself as "Sporty Spice", from the 90's girl band The Spice Girls. If I could wear my tennis shoes and warm up pants everyday I would, but Amy won't let me- not with my daily growing bump. And she is sooo right! I'm officially in my second trimester and unlike many women my bump and I have already implemented many of Amy's tips. Here are a few:

1. I purged my closet of clothes of have not worn for months (and most likely will never wear)

2. The A-line dress (which I already had) I received so many compliments the day I wore it

3. Accessorize, I bought a few necklaces and earrings. (Thankfully my husband is reading a wonderful book- which I will review later- that told him to prepare financially for a new maternity wardrobe.)

If you are pregnant or know someone who is expecting, this is a MUST read book. Don't wait for the baby shower, purchase it for your friend or family member as a "Congratulations" gift.

Prenatal Yoga

My doctor told me that yoga, swimming, and pilates are the best exercises for pregnant mommies. Although I have not given up on my weekly circuit class at Circuit Works in Brentwood (www.circuitworksla.com), I decided to google "Prenatal Yoga". I handful of yoga studios popped up in my search but how to did I know which one to choose? It came down to class times. I needed a classes either before or after work, and Two Hearts Yoga (twoheartsyoga.com) was the nearest yoga studio that had class times I could attend.

I was so nervous going to my first class I had no idea what to expect and Lord knows I'm not flexible, at all. But as a I pulled into the parking lot I saw a handful of pregnant bellies walking up the stairs to the Yoga Studio and at that moment I knew I was not alone. In my first class there were 10 women all at different stages in their pregnancy. Before we began, each women said her name and how far along she was. This was a really comfortable feeling- there were mommies 30 weeks along, as well as newbies like myself. The instructor was amazing- when I left the Yoga studio I felt like I had just given myself a massage. My tension was gone and I was breathing better.

I LOVE Two Hearts Yoga and can't wait for my next session!

A Career Most Colleges DON'T Tell You About

At the age of 17 I applied for college with the dream of becoming a school counselor. My major of choice- Psychology. Half way through my college career I heard of the major "Human Services." Human Services offered tracks in school counseling, social work, teaching, or geriatrics. I decided to change my major from Psychology to Human Services emphasizing in school counseling (of course!) I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children.

A friend of mine, who graduated two years ahead of me, with a teaching credential came back to campus, and told me she was a nanny. I said, "You do what?" She proceeded to tell me all about her amazing new live-in nanny position, job details, salary, ect. I was blown away! No one on campus- teachers, students, coaches, administration- NO ONE talk about becoming a professional nanny.

The moral to the story is Child Development, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Teachers, and college student with a degree in a related field need to be educated on ALL their job options after college.

I've been wanting to make homemade popsicles for a long time. You know, fresh fruit pops, no cane sugar, no corn syrup, or artificial ingredients they put in popsicles these days. I've been looking for the best pop maker, and finally found it at the Brookstone store in our local mall.

Zoku Quick Pop Maker for $50. At first thought it was a total impluse buy, but when I got home, read the directions, and made my first batch of pops- AMAZING!! You can make pops within 15-20 minutes (depending on the type of pops you decide to make.) Yes, I said "type of pops." The Hard & Fast on How to Land Your Dream Nanny Job

Do you wonder how some nannies are getting jobs and you've been waiting weeks, possibly months to find your dream nanny position? Here are 4 tips on how to land your dream job:

1. Set realistic expectations: Everyone wants a high paying salary, but do you have the experience and qualifications for a top-paying nanny position? If you answer is, "heck yeah", see if you meet the following criteria:

- 10+ year experience working as a professional nanny, I repeat AS A PROFESSIONAL NANNY.

- A college degree

- Longevity at your positions 3+ years (not hoping from job-to-job)

- Flexibility to travel for weeks, possible months at a time.

- Verifiable references (reference letters & UP-TO-DATE phone numbers of former employers)

- Passion. Are you living your passion. Is being a nanny, working with children, something you are passionate about. This will come across to anyone you come in contact with. Live your

passion!

*Know that with high-paying nanny positions comes lots of competition, you need to bring your A-game.

2. Presentation: How do you present yourself during your interview with an agency, and if given the opportunity with a potential employer:

- Professional attire is ALWAYS a plus, and shows that you take your career seriously.

- Your hair and nails should be well groomed. No excessive jewelry or make-up.

- Have a copy of your resume and copies of your references in hand.

- Give a firm handshake and look the interviewer in the eye when speaking

3. Salary: It's a hard topic and the majority of the nannies who I meet are not comfortable discussing salary. The truth of the matter is the economy is still struggling, and nannies need to be flexible with their salaries. As an example, nannies who used to make $20/hr. are now willing to accept a position for $18/hr. Most nannies who meet (and exceed the qualifications listed above) are set on making a top-salary. On average, if you are not flexible with your wages, you will be looking 3-6 weeks for your next position (possibly longer). Nannies who are more flexible with their wages, are more likely to get a new job- or at least an opportunity to for an interview. I know we all have bills to pay, but if possible I suggest being flexible with your salary.

4. Professional Resume: Need I say more? This is a MUST. This is a whole other blog post, and I will post "how to have a professional resume" later this month.

5. Patience: "Good things come to those who wait." If an agency says "check in with me once a week," then by all means call them once a week. Agencies (good agencies that is) receive hundreds of emails and phone calls of week of potential candidate's. I suggest emailing, rather than calling the agency you have applied with.

Are you trying to find a job? Have you been on a few interviews or sent your resume to a few staffing agencies or directly to an employer but can't seem to find the right position? Here's a few tips that may help your chance of at least getting a foot in the door:

Facebook:

* Your should have a professional profile picture. Pictures of you partying with friends or provocative photos lower your chances of landing the perfect job

* Monitor what you are posting AND what your friends are posting. Profanity, vulgar comments, ect. will lower your chances of getting a new position

*Use the "privacy setting" allowing "only friends" to see your postings. This will help to separate work and play AND contribute to your chances of finding a new job

Baby on Board: Preparing for Your New Arrival

Congratulations! Your family is about to grow. You've painted the nursery, unwrapped the baby shower gifts and read all you possibly can on the subject of parenting ... but that blessed day finally arrives, check-and-double check to make sure you've done all you can to prepare for your new addition! Rebecca Stewart offers her tips on how best to get ready for your new baby.

1. PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!

Prepare your partner; it's helpful for dads to recognize the symptoms and know the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression (and when you should seek medical advice). Even if moms seem completely out of control (and they might!), they still need support.

2. DON'T FORGET YOUR OWN NEEDS DURING YOUR FIRST FEW WEEKS AS A MOTHER

Set realistic expectations; you won't be back to pre-pregnancy clothes the day after you've given birth. Some days you may not even manage to get dressed. This is okay! Keep daily expectations to a minimum and look at everything you manage to do as an achievement.

Take time to shower (not a bath for the first several weeks to prevent infection); make time for daily hygiene – this helps to make moms feel human again!

Eat!; eat plenty of healthy meals and snacks. Skipping meals can make you feel worn out and may affect your milk production. Extra calories are important if breastfeeding. Your baby needs all the nutrients possible, which is supplied through breast milk.

Sex; if having a vaginal birth, you may not be able to have sex for up to five weeks.

Sleep deprivation; it will happen. Get ready!

3. TALK, TALK, TALK

Be honest and express your feelings about any and everything. If you're tired and overwhelmed, say, "Honey, I'm so tired. I might be a bit on edge, be aware." If it's important for you to always have the kitchen clean or fresh towels readily available every morning, communicate this. Spouses are not always aware of what their partner often does and needs on a daily basis.

4. HAVE PATIENCE
This might be hard when you are sleep deprived, but some dads want to be as involved as possible. Teach them how to swaddle, how to bottle feed your baby (and when formula is to be used instead of breast milk at particular feedings), etc.

5. HIRE A BABY NURSE
If you can afford it, hire a baby nurse. They will be a tremendous help! A good baby nurse will ...

Be an expert with any and everything baby; a professional baby nurse ("newborn specialist") should have at least five years of experience. During year one, a baby nurse may have worked for three-six different families.

Set up a routine that works best for the baby and your family.

Provide overall emotional support for parents; both parents will get more rest and be able to spend more time together. They allow a couple to be a couple, not just "mommy and daddy."

Presentation. Always arrive fresh, clean, and well put together. People notice details, make sure your hair is clean, brushed, finger nails are clean and groomed.

Maintaining hydration is the primary concern of vomiting. Infants under 6 mo: 1/2 oz of pedialyte (b/c of the salt in the electrolyte solution) every 15 min or so, slowly increasing amt if vomiting stops. Infants 6 mo-1yr, pretty much the same, but start the amount a bit higher.

A story of a HARD working nanny!

One of our fabulous VIP Nannies has been working part-time and temporary jobs during 2009, while looking for a full-time nanny position.

In November 2008 I approached her regarding a full-time, 3 month, live-in nanny position, making a decent salary. The only problem, the nanny is married. She spoke with her husband, knowing they were having financial difficulties and that she needed full-time work, she accepted the position. The family respected her decision and marriage, and gave her 5 hours off every-night to go home to have dinner and spend time with her husband.

I spoke with the Nanny yesterday, and she said, "Rebecca, this is not an easy job, but I have been able to pay off so many bills that have been stacking up for months!" Hearing the nanny say "she's been able to pay off SO MANY bills" just warms my heart. Hard work always pays-off!

F.A.Q's regarding the Holidays:

Q. What is typical bonus for a nanny?

A. One weeks salary- cash.

Q. Bonus vs. Gift?

A. Some family's give a bonus and a small gift. Some just give a gift, some just give a bonus. Depending upon how long your nanny has been working for you, here are some gift ideas:

-Gym membership

-Gift certificate to a spa for a massage and/or facial (your nanny deserves some pampering too)

-Gift Certificate to the movies, Starbucks/Coffee Bean, or a local restaurant

-New cell phone

-New Sunglasses

-New Hand-Bag

-Have your kids make her/him something personal (perhaps from Color Me Mine)

-May sound crazy, but I have known some family's to buy their nanny a New Car

* You know your nanny best. What are his/her hobbies and give a gift accordingly.

Q. If we travel do we need to pay our nanny?

A. It depends on what you and the nanny agreed to upon hire. My answer is yes- when you travel (without your nanny) she/he still needs to be paid her/his typical weeks salary.

I cannot tell you how how inappropriate it is for a nanny (or housekeeper) to be talking and ESPECIALLY text messaging on their cell phone while at work. The ONLY exception would be in the case of a family emergency. In the case of an emergency, as soon as you walk in the door of your Employers home you should LET YOUR BOSS KNOW you may need to be on your cell phone due to an emergency. Otherwise PUT YOUR CELL PHONE AWAY (on silent) or TURN IT OFF while at work.

I won't even get started about being on your cell phone while at the park- EVERY nanny should know better!

Holiday's

I have received numerous phone calls this past week from Parents asking:

1. "What do we do if we are traveling (without our nanny) during the Holidays. Do we still need to pay her/him?"

YES! YES! YES! Nannies should be compensated when their Employer leaves town. I cannot tell you how many nannies and housekeepers I have heard of that quit there jobs because their Employer did not pay them when they went out of town.

If you require your nanny and/or housekeeper to work ON Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, she should be paid time and a half for every hour they work.

What Nannies Should do During a Recession

There are TONS of professionals nannies without work, and some have been without work for months. Job orders are coming in, but what make one nanny get the job over another? Here are a few tips (aka feedback from families) as to why they hired one nanny over another:

1. Make or update your resume. I cannot stress this enough. If you don't have a resume MAKE ONE and if you have a resume UPDATE it, and make sure it looks professional.

There are many website that can help you create a professional resume, but here are a few tips:

Have an easy to read resume. Use bullet points instead of long paragraphs, make sure it is not over crowded, has white space, 12 point fonts, two pages, and does not have a lot of abbreviations, functional or industry jargon.
Make sure vital information used for screening stands out such as,company description and industry, title, dates, organization, number of people managed, scope of responsibility, etc.
Pleasing to the eye.
Well organized and laid out.

2. Stay active and healthy. If you are not working, don't sit around waiting, STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE by taking walks, going for a run, riding your bike, going to the gym, swimming at the local pool, try to get in a little exercise everyday. I'm not saying spend money by getting a gym membership, there are plenty of ways to stay active without spending a dime. Remember, you're a nanny- you chance after little children, parents value a physically active nanny.

3. The market is competitive. Salaries are not what they used to be and many qualified professional nannies have lowered there rates, not drastically but in order to compete for a job. Yes, the high profile, high paying nanny position do exists but the number of professional nannies being considered for these positions are double, if not triple, what they were 1-2 years ago. Stay competitive, but if you are able to be flexible- this is just a suggestion.

National Nanny Recognition Week is coming, September 20-26, 2009. This is a week to thank your nanny for all their hard work and to show you care!! Just a few ideas you can do for your nanny this week:

-Treat your nanny to breakfast or a BBQ made by your family

-Give her and card and/or framed photo of the children

-Encourage your children to say Thank You!

-Give him/her the day off

-Gift Certificate (Starbucks, Borders Books, Coffee Bean, Manicure, ect.)

-A special dinner at home or out

There are MANY other things you can do do some appreciation toward your nanny, this is just a start.

Going Rate for PROFESSIONAL Nannies

The key word here is PROFESSIONAL. The rate for a professional nanny in Los Angeles, CA ranges from $15-25/hr. Why such a large margin? I am often asked, "What's the difference between a $15/hr nanny and a $25/hr nanny?" Nannies salaries are typically based on the following:

Level of English

Driver vs. Non-Driver

Years of Experience

Level of Education

Ability to Travel

Number of Children in the Family

Extent of Responsibilities

For example, if you are hiring someone who speak perfect English, drives, and has a vehicle for use on the job, holds 5-10 year experience, has a child-development degree and/or college education, is able to travel anywhere in the world, can care for 2 or more children at a time, is willing to do errands and light housekeeping as needed and when time permits, then we are looking at a top notch nanny who should be making minimum $22/hr.

Stepping down the ladder, we get the next level that is more available to most. A nanny who speak good English (but not excellent), drives, has 3-5 years of experience but little child-development education and no college credits, cannot travel outside of the country either because she doesn't want to or only has a work permit instead of a resident card or US passport, will care for 1-2 children and does housekeeping chores as time permits, would be paid $15-18/hr.

There are other variable that can play into a salary: at-home parents to assist with children, infant/toddler experience, driving (mileage and gas reimbursement), just to name a few.
